The Toolkit is a free resource. We want to know who is using it (e.g. high school students, counselors) so that we can generate new information that meets your needs. It takes less than a minute to sign up, and we only ask for your school/institution name and your role (like student, teacher). Your email address will not be shared and you will not be spammed.
You don’t need to know anything about technology to use this Toolkit. As you work through the pages, you will:
- Explore digital careers - You’ll learn to do hands-on-keyboard tasks so that you can experience what the job involves. You’ll see information about the job outlook, career paths, skills & training so that you can decide which direction is best for you. For the career path you’re interested in, you’ll review a job description and draft a letter of interest to an employer. Keep this - you’ll need it one day.
- Plan Your Pathway - You’ll discover what matters most to you in a digital career, how to navigate workforce training programs, and consider how to weigh your postsecondary options.
Working through the Toolkit takes more than one sitting. Some activities involve learning how to use new software and researching the scope of different career paths. Some of these takes can be challenging so that you can get a realistic experience of what the job entails.
As an educator, you don’t need to know anything about digital careers. These resources are designed for you to learn and turn key to your students.
There are 7 careers to explore with activities, lesson plans and materials to use with a class of high school students. Each career includes a Facilitator Guide with suggestions for using the materials in one lesson or an entire unit. There are also supplemental activities for teachers and background materials. We also included slides for some of the careers.

As a counselor, you don’t need to know anything about digital careers. These resources are designed for you to learn and turn key to the learners you work with.
The learners you work with - high school students or young adults who have graduated from high school - can explore the career pages on their own at your direction. You can use the resources about training programs and certifications to guide them. There is a section to introduce the concept of weighing the ROI of various postsecondary options. Included in the Toolkit are suggestions for using the materials one-on-one or in small groups.

Educators can earn a free Advising for Digital Careers micro-credential by working through the Toolkit. Micro-credentials are competency-based recognition of professional learning, providing an opportunity for educators to manage their professional learning at their own pace. Educators design activities that adapt the Toolkit for learners who are new to the country, learners who are long term absentees, families, etc. Shared Lane offers the micro-credential in partnership with Digital Promise.
